Every week, Boost brings you insights straight from the writers in our Creative Network. Writers share tips on how to inject more creativity into ads, best practices for writing ad copy, and more. This week, Dylan Barmmer, pen name “wordisborn” who has been an active writer in the Network for over five years, shares why every day is a chance to practice creativity.
For several years now, I’ve lived by the tenets of a fairly simple motto: ABC – Always Be Creating.
What does this mean, exactly? Well, for me, it means just what it says. Every day, carve out some time to be creative. To sharpen your conceptual skills. To flex your creative muscles. To focus on pure, passionate creativity.
Write something. Draw something. Make something. Dream something up. And then…write some more.
As a professional writer, I find this to be much more than a luxury. For me, it’s a necessity.
But what are some practical, actionable ways you can make sure to always be creating? Or at least thinking about creating? Well, here are a few:
- Go to a museum or art gallery: It doesn’t have to be a high-end, massive-scale museum like The Getty or The Philadelphia Museum of Art. It can be a little local gallery. Or even a kids’ museum. The point is to expand your mind. Surround yourself with creative expression. And soak in all the rich diversity and emotion of the art world. Then come back recharged and reenergized.
- Listen to music: Several studies have shown that music has a direct impact on creativity and expression, especially classical music. But you don’t have to fire up “O Fortuna” to feel the full effect. Just put on anything that really moves you. Or better yet, expand your horizons and tune into something new. Apple’s iTunes Radio and Pandora are great options to explore the auditory universe.
- Spend time in nature: There are few things as purely and powerfully inspiring (and awe-inspiring) as spending some time out in nature. Especially in today’s over-stimulated, always-on world, a little getaway out amongst the birds and the bees (and maybe even the bears?) can go a long way. Go camping for the weekend. Or just go for a hike on your lunch break. Get outside. Commune with nature. Watch the animals play. Stop and smell the roses. Or other flowers. Enjoy it all. It’s all inspiring!
These are just a few ways to sharpen, hone, develop and flex your creative muscles. No matter what activity you choose, remember one other important rule of thumb:
