Every week, Boost brings you insights straight from the writers in our Creative Network. Writers share tips on how to inject more creativity into ads, best practices for writing ad copy, and more. This week, Dylan Barmmer, pen name “wordisborn” who has been an active writer in the Network for over five years, shares about advertising growth.

There’s no mistaking it. The U.S. advertising market is riding a wave of momentum right now.

In fact, this year’s U.S. ad market is expected to grow at its fastest rate since 2010 – surging ahead at a nearly six-percent clip in 2016.

Per a report from London, England-based advertising research firm Warc, U.S. ad spend will rise 5.8 percent to a record high of $178 billion in 2016. This figure far exceeds a previously touted growth estimation of 4.9 percent – and also stands as double the amount projected for the overall U.S. economy.

TV + Digital Both Surging

Buoyed by the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics and the U.S. Presidential race, TV ad spending is expected to rise 6.6 percent to $68 billion in 2016 – a stark contrast to 2015, when Warc said the U.S. TV ad market sank 3.5 percent from 2014.

But the main avenue of expansion comes in digital advertising. Warc claims that U.S. digital media spending will surge at more than double the rate of all that TV growth – clocking in at a robust 13.7 percent. Warc also estimates that digital media will achieve nearly the same dollar value of the TV ad market this year, then push ahead of TV spending in 2017.

That 2017 estimate for digital advertising is a robust $76 billion, with a full half of that figure going to mobile platforms. Warc also estimates that 2017 will see $553.70 spent on advertising for every U.S. person, which will represent a $60-per-person rise since 2012.
